Introduction to cognitive neuroscience

The aim of this course is to give basic knowledge in neuroscience to students that do not have a background in biology. The course is divided into 3 themes: descriptive human neuroanatomy, functional neuroanatomy and cellular neuroscience. During the lectures students will become familiar with the neuroanatomical nomenclature, the description of the main functions of the central nervous system and the cellular phenomenon that underlie them. As this course is directed towards students that are not biologists, discussions are strongly encouraged during the lectures.

No prerequisites; this course is aimed at students that do not have a background in biology.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this course, students should be able to:

  • Understand and use the neuroanatomical nomenclature;
  • Localise the different structures of the nervous system;
  • Describe the main functions related to neuroanatomical regions;
  • Understand the main functional organization of motor and sensory systems;
  • Describe the role of the autonomous nervous system;
  • Describe the role of the hypothalamus and the hypophysis gland;
  • Understand the main cellular mechanisms of neural function.
